Ralph Gibson

Photographe d’art américain né en 1939. Engagé dans la marine à 17 ans, il est affecté au département photographie de la base de Pensacola, en Floride. Il étudie au San Francisco Art Institute (1960-1962), puis devient assistant de Dorothea Lange. Photographe de mode et de publicité, il crée son studio et sa maison d’édition à New York en 1967. Dès lors, il s’oriente vers une démarche photographique plus personnelle et en 1970, publie « The Somnambulist », premier ouvrage d’une trilogie qui fait sa réputation. Il publiera plusieurs autres livres de photographies.

American art photographer born in 1939. He joined the US Navy Pensacola photographic Dept at the age of 17. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1960 to 1962 and became assistant of Dorothea Lange. First a fashion and advertising photographer, he settled his studio & publishing company in New York in 1967. From then, he turned to a more personal photographic work. In 1970, he published “The Somnambulist”, first part of a trilogy that built his reputation as a photographer. Numerous other books followed.
